Healthy Eating Award Steering Group

Partner description:

The 'Healthy Eating Award Steering Group' runs the 'Eat Out Eat Well' healthy eating award scheme for caterers.

The aim of this award is to increase awareness and knowledge of healthier food options amongst both consumers and food business operators (FBOs) in the takeaway food sector and other areas of the catering industry.

It rewards businesses that promote healthy eating, and who make it easier for consumers to find healthier food choices when eating out or taking away.

The award is open to all types of establishments that cater for the general public, including takeaways, cafes, sandwich shops, and restaurants.

The award has three levels – Bronze, Silver, and Gold, and is symbolised by an apple logo in the shape of a heart.

The level of award is based on a scoring system that takes into account the type of food on offer, cooking methods, and how caterers promote it to their customers. To obtain a Gold Award, key members of staff will usually need to undertake some form of accredited or recognised training in nutrition.

We offer subsidised nutrition training to caterers such as the RSPH Level 2 Award in Healthier Food and Special Diets.

The 'Eat Out Eat Well' award was launched in Surrey in 2009 in partnership with the Department of Health South East (who funded the evaluation), Environmental Health, NHS Surrey, University of Surrey, and the Food Standards Agency.

The scheme is now up and running in the following local authorities outside Surrey - Crawley, Medway, Bath and NE Somerset, West Berkshire and Wokingham, and is just about to be launched in other local authorities.

The Healthy Eating Award Steering Group made up of all the main partners and caterers meets on a regular basis to discuss how the scheme can be widened and improved.
