One third of all meals and takeaways sold on the high street this year will have their calories displayed on menus

Over 40 food businesses, including most of the big names on the high street, have now signed up to the Government’s Responsibility Deal calorie labelling pledge – with around 9,500 outlets across the country this year set to help customers make healthier choices when eating out. This represents one third of all the meals and takeaways sold on the high street.

Subway is the latest high street chain to join 41 other food businesses to introduce calorie labelling throughout all of its 1,420 UK outlets. Starbucks have also recently rolled out the initiative, joining many of the other major chains including Burger King, Greggs, Harvester Restaurants, JD Wetherspoon, KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Pret a Manger and Wimpy.

Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley said:

“One in six meals are now eaten outside the home and for those meals we often have no idea how many calories we are eating.

“That’s why it’s great to see that Subway have signed up to this commitment as part of the Responsibility Deal, which will help customers know the calories in their favourite foods and think about the choices they’re making.

“With Subway on board there are now over 9,500 big name food outlets on the high street set to provide calorie labelling this year, which together sell over one third of all meals and takeaways. This is a great achievement by the Responsibility Deal.”
