Ipswich Building Society – H3: Health and Wellbeing Report

What issue was facing your organisation?

The Society was not facing a particular issue but we are actively working to promote health and wellbeing opportunities within the business, with the Responsibility Deal the ideal way to validate and focus our efforts and achievements.

What action did your organisation take?

A: Our health and wellbeing programme focuses on improving physical and mental health and access to services for all employees. Initiatives range from a permanently available head office “quiet room” for rest and relaxation, to inter-company competitions, subsidised yoga classes and ‘reward scheme’ which sees employees earn points for taking part in activities, in exchange for time off work.

We promote and take part in local and national events, such as the Workplace Challenge and Suffolk One Million Step Challenge. Our intranet is used to share information about health events and focus days, and features resources with advice on topics such as Five A Day, healthier takeaways, snack swaps and alcohol awareness.

What has been the impact of implementing health interventions?

Our health and wellbeing initiatives have had a positive impact on our absence and staff turnover figures, with 2013 seeing 1.45% absence and 8.41% staff turnover. This equates to a 28% and 61% decrease respectively since 2010. We share our story with other businesses, mentoring them to make positive changes and taking an active in role in local events and working groups such as the Business in The Community Business Action on Public Health network.

Chief Executive Paul Winter has been invited to speak at various local and national events, including the National Health & Wellbeing at Work conference and as expert testimony for developing national guidance for workplace health for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). We were also visited by BBC Breakfast News to feature in their study about the benefits of active lunchtimes.
