Reformulation forms an integral component of ASDA brand strategy, which is supported by annual nutrition audits to drive improvement. ASDA have two reformulation arms – the first comprises reductions based on Multiple Traffic Light (MTL) criteria, where products are reformulated to move from red to amber or amber to green where nutrients are close to the criteria boundaries. In 2014 204 red MTLs were converted to amber and 500 from amber to green. The second is category specific reformulation, where, following each audit, select categories are targeted for saturated fat reductions. For example, in 2014 14.8 tonnes of saturated fat was removed from ambient sauces. In 2014 the total reformulation programme resulted in the removal of 72 tonnes of sat fat based on sales weighted data.
