The Ministry of Defence is committed to supporting those staff who may be victims of domestic violence and abuse, or who may be worried about their colleagues. The Department is committed to creating a supportive environment to encourage those experiencing abuse to seek help and advice.

In order to deliver against the pledge, the Ministry of Defence will raise awareness by:

• Using internal communications to align with messaging for International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November, to raise awareness and highlight the support and guidance available.

• Including articles in MOD publications to highlight the Department’s commitment to the pledge and to raise awareness of the support available to staff and their colleagues.

• Making information available to staff which highlights the behaviours that constitute domestic violence & abuse and explaining how to access help and support.

The advice provided by the Department on Domestic Abuse has recently been updated and now includes practical guidance for employees and line managers. The practical guidance for employees and line managers who may be suffering from domestic abuse has been developed using literature provided by the Department of Health. This includes professional advice on steps to take in handling this issue. In addition the Department provides a check list for employees and managers to provide clear guidance on the support available.

Support for staff affected by Domestic Violence is also available through the Department’s Employee Wellbeing Service. This is an internal service available to employees who may be struggling with a wide range of issues. Support specific to victims of Domestic Abuse is available for staff who can contact the confidential service using a helpline.
