F9. Salt Reduction 2017

Submitted: 15 July, 2014
Salt reduction is a key part of our product improvement process and has been for many years. We met the FSA 2010 targets ahead of the deadline and are proud that to date 96% of our own brand products with a relevant salt category meet the 2012 targets.
As reported in our 2014 annual update, 96% of our entire range met the 2012 targets with the remaining products within meat products and morning goods still presenting us and the rest of the industry with technical difficulties. We will continue reducing salt towards the 2017 targets by targeting priority products for reformulation when the opportunity arises on our product development plan. Subject to technical, quality and shelf life constraints new products will meet the 2017 targets on launch. However, some products will require acceptable technical solutions which we are working with the rest of the industry to identify and implement.
In addition, to reformulation activity we encourage and educate our customers to reduce their salt intake through various channels as well as communicating salt content of pre-packaged foods and recipes through use of at-a-glance multiple traffic light colour coded nutrition labelling.
