Delivery plan:

Submitted: 30 May, 2014

In the last year, the Department has continued its work to integrate the views of young people in health policies as part of its contribution to the Government’s social mobility strategy. Through the Department’s premier work experience programme ‘Building Bridges’, the Department supports and educate the next generation of active citizens to increase their awareness of the public sector and help them consider a career in the civil service and to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing. The programme, which is recognized by Cabinet Office and nominated for a Civil Service Award is intended for year 10 students (ages between 14 – 15 years) from local partners secondary schools in London and Leeds. Some of these students represent communities and areas that are under-represented in the Civil service. During this period, the students participated in health and wellbeing awareness events, including:

• World Mental Health week – over 20 local students attended key mental health awareness raising events with ministers and Dame Carol Black and 2 went on to secure support for family members dealing with mental health conditions
• 2013 Civil Service Live – over 8 students visited various staff health and wellbeing stalls at the civil service live event and have since requested mindfulness session in the school especially for those sitting their exams
• Children’s Commissioner Takeover Day – over 30 students took part in the children’s takeover day (including disabled students) and were able to lead policy conversations and contribute to the children’s health outcome work
• Remembrance Day event: over 40 local students participated in a dedicated remembrance day event aimed at bringing together civilian and non-civilian young people to get together and discuss some health related issues (such as bereavement, substance/general abuse, attachment and loss issues)
• In May and June 2014 DH will pilot Mindfulness training with 50 fast streamers across government.
• DH Staff health and wellbeing Programme is now included in induction events for staff including (younger colleagues)
• DH staff health and wellbeing Z-card (detailed list of confidential helplines of our external partners and the services they provide) is promoted to all new starters including young people joining the Department
