The BMC has an Equity Steering Group. A large part of the group's work involves looking at barriers that under-represented groups face when they want to go climbing, hill walking and mountaineering and suggesting strategies for removing those barriers.
Each year, the BMC holds a symposium or a series of workshops to explore tackling the barriers and inequalities that prevent some groups from being active. In 2014, the BMC ‘Equity Symposium 2014: Breaking Down the Barriers’ is a weekend of practical sessions, outdoor instruction and inspiring speakers. The aim is to celebrate and support ethnic minority adventure in the great outdoors.
A report will be put together following the symposium and the progress of a number of participants will be monitored.
