Within Mott MacDonald we monitor work related ill health on a monthly basis and report to senior management about the number and type of cases and how they are being managed. This is undertaken in conjunction with HR Managers.

Health and wellbeing, including specific objectives, is included in our annual planning cycle at Group, Regional and Unit level. The annual review summarises progress with our targets and also details progress made with health and wellbeing programme in general. An extract from the 2013 annual review is provided below:

"During 2013 there were 57 cases of work-related ill health reported which resulted in 895 days lost, an increase on 2012 data (41 cases and 731 days lost). The number of days lost is obviously considerably greater than the number of days lost due to accidents at work (105). Work-related ill health cases are mainly due to stress and work-related anxiety and are managed on a case by case basis by HR, specialist occupational health practitioners, GPs and line management. Each case is managed individually and the priority is to resolve any existing issues and facilitate a successful return to work.

Promoting wellbeing and managing work-related ill health issues will continue to be a focus in 2014. Unit safety plans and staff council initiatives will be used to increase awareness of the issues and offer assistance to managers. Mini health checks will be offered at the majority of UK offices and we will also look into providing a similar service to our European offices."
