Pledge:

H7. Mental Health and Wellbeing

Committed since:

3 December, 2013

Delivery plan:

Submitted: 28 January, 2014

DECC is committed to taking action to ensure that we improve and optimise the performance and engagement of our people by ensuring their physical and mental wellbeing at work.

DECC signed up to the Time to Change pledge on 6th December and on the same day our Wellbeing intranet page was updated with a new “Mental Health: tools to support managers and staff” page added. The toolkit offers practical information, advice and tips to help inform decision-making across a range of issues. It also offers information on where staff can get help if they are worried about mental health issues or if someone in their life is affected by a mental health problem. The toolkit is supplemented by specialist advice services such as our Occupational health: medical referral process which provides advice for our line managers to help them determine the most appropriate course of medical action or support. In addition our Employee Assistance Programme offers staff and line managers a confidential telephone service 24 hours every day of the week.

DECC will be promoting the Time to Change, “Time to Talk Day” on 6th February to staff. We will be encouraging our staff to take part in the national conversation about mental and to share their experiences via the Time to Change website and also via the DECC intranet site.
During 12-18 May 2014, DECC is also planning a series of events to take place at the department during Mental Health Awareness Week.

In terms of a holistic approach to a healthier life, the department is providing support opportunities for staff and we have identified monthly initiatives which will develop their overall wellbeing throughout 2014. We will be promoting healthy eating on 10 March to coincide with salt awareness week in keeping with the “healthy eating” theme that is being promoted by our Employee Assistance Provider PPC Worldwide and then on 14th July we will be promoting Stress & resilience in the workplace to coincide with national feel good day.
