Ginsters instigated an Active Workplace program at its Callington site in 2007. This programme was free to all staff and was constructed around the needs of a 24/7 bakery operation. The benefits of increased physical activity were actively promoted to all staff. This was supported by individual health screening and taster days to introduce new sports and leisure activities and the creation of an on-site gym available to all staff, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
The programme was very positively received and its delivery has become a role model nationally. The programme has evolved into one which is much broader in its scope. Health screenings and an array of activities are as popular as ever and usually delivered by our own, now fully qualified staff. In addition we have a fully subscribed allotments scheme for those who like to produce something from their activity. We provide nutrition/diet advice and weight loss classes. Periodically, advice is made available on many lifestyle issues such as alcohol intake, smoking, drug use, personal finance etc. The programme also assists in the return to work process for staff who have suffered either long or short term absence.
The majority of our activities are now made available to local suppliers and to the staff of our local schools and Higher Education College. We continue to be involved with the Peninsular Medical Centre and the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, who are researching the impact of our programme on the health and wellbeing of individuals, in particular the role of outdoor activity on human health. We continue to work with Dame Carol Black as part of the Health at Work Network, which has helped scope parts of the Public Health Responsibility Deal.
Increasingly, this programme is being incorporated into our staff training and development work on site. Vocational development is facilitated by a positive attitude to change and personal growth which can be promoted by the delivery of an active workplace scheme.
