At Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust we are keen to promote active travel as part of our sustainability and health promotion agenda.
We currently have a travel plan in place that promotes the benefits of active travel to the Trust’s +/- 4,000 employees. We measure our progress against this plan by undertaking an annual travel survey with our staff to establish transport modal shift.
To support cycling to and from our hospital Campus we offer interest free cycle loans to our staff to enable them to procure bicycles and cycling equipment. We have shower facilities available in most buildings and lockers are also available for staff to store their cycle wear and equipment safely. Safe and secure cycle parking facilities are being provided to staff and visitors to the hospital. The Trust is also working closely with the local authorities to ensure that the cycling and walking routes near and through the hospital Campus are being further developed.
The health benefits of active travel are also being promoted throughout the year and the Trust supports national walking and cycling initiatives by hosting events that introduce individuals to cycling and walking as a healthy commuting alternative. The Trust also works closely with the local Heart and Sole walking groups by incorporating the hospital Campus in formal walks and by promoting local walking routes.
