Pledge:

H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants

Committed since:

4 October, 2013

Delivery plan:

Submitted: 26 November, 2013

We will, as of January 2014, provide calorie information on all food and drink provided at British Safety Council premises, whether that is for staff, customer or visitor consumption in either our Learning Zone cafeteria or in our staff refreshments area (F5). The information will be provided in a labelling and information format as agreed by the Responsibility Deal.

We will also provide information on typical guideline calorie intake figures for men and women in the Learning Zone and in F5, along with information on BMI and body fat guideline figures, as of January 2014.

We will enable those dining in the Learning Zone to eat and drink fewer calories through menu reformulation, so that calorie information is clearly available, and through portion size awareness and control from January 2014.

We will not use any artificial trans fats in any food prepared on site, and will strive to remove snack foods which contain trans fats from F5 by March 2014.

We will, as of January 2014, reduce the salt content of food prepared on site to be as low as is reasonable and, in all cases, be supportive of the public health goal of an individual consuming no more than 6g of salt per day. We will also ensure that foods will be cooked without added salt and that ‘table-salt’ will only be available at a customer’s direct request, and only then in small sachets rather than in cellars. In terms of kitchen practices, we will train our chefs on the importance of salt reduction and how salt intake can be moderated.

We already create a positive environment that supports the consumption of fruit and vegetables, either in snack form in F5 or with the meals available in the Learning Zone, and will continue to do so through both availability and price differentiation.
