In 2014 we are introducing a Know Your Numbers scheme, whereby staff undergo basic health and wellbeing assessments, including blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI and body fat measurements. Healthy lifestyle advice is then made available as a result on an individual, tailored basis. This will take place in quarter one 2014.

In January 2014 we will also raise awareness of free NHS screening programmes available to staff and will encourage participation throughout the year.

The British Safety Council also supports employees who choose a healthy lifestyle, by contributing to the cost of membership of a health & fitness club or sports club, a Cessation of smoking scheme or the purchase of a bicycle. The Council will pay a one-off cost of £50 per person per year in support of one of the schemes mentioned.

Commencing in January 2014 the British Safety Council will monitor and report on the take up of the above initiatives (as and where appropriate) and encourage staff to come forward with case studies demonstrating how such initiatives have led to an improvement in their health, wellbeing or lifestyle. Such case studies will be published on our staff intranet, and, where appropriate in our Members magazine (Safety Management) and on our website.

We will also continue to monitor our sickness/absence rates and manage this key metric, which we will include in a section on health and wellbeing in our annual reports and/or web-pages commencing at the end of quarter one 2014. In addition to this we will measure and report internally staff turnover, staff survey results and/ or the take up of flexible working arrangements.
