Current Activity:

The Trust is committed to offering a range of access opportunities to those in or leaving school/college. We do this in a variety of ways: work experience and work simulation programmes designed to offer school children an ‘experience’ of work; apprenticeship programmes which offer learning whilst earning and specifically designed programmes such as The Princes Trust.

All our programmes are designed to simulate or, as in the case of apprenticeships, provide a salaried job with an accompanying skills development programme. These allow the individual to understand/gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and personal skills required for their immediate job, future career and personal health and well being development.

We recently ran a Princes Trust ‘Get into Healthcare’ programme for 18 young people, where we introduced the Level 2 Royal Society of Public Health qualification. This provided 7 guided learning hours and delivered an understanding of the principles of promoting health and well being, examples of inequalities of health, discussions about effects of healthy and unhealthy eating, alcohol consumption and smoking. The programme concluded with an exam to test knowledge. The majority of candidates passed the exam.

We also introduced ‘Making Every Contact Count, MECC’ training to raise the issue of lifestyle choices and how to share this information. The two programmes worked well together and complimented each other providing knowledge, understanding and signposting.

Future Plans:

We plan to embed both programmes into our apprenticeship programme for young people. These would become part of the syllabus for every young person employed in the organisation. We could also offer this to other apprentices working within the Eastern Region.
