Healthy eating and providing our customers with the information to make informed food choices is a priority at H&J, which is why we started investing three years ago in our own bespoke nutrition project called Nourish & Flourish. This doesn’t just involve providing nutritional information on our core hot meals but also for the majority of our fresh grab & go items including sandwiches, salads and sushi.

As well as this, we have made nutritional information even more accessible to customers by highlighting key health benefits using our own set of H&J stickers, these point out added benefits such as low cal, low fat or one of your five a day. Supported by our full-time H&J nutritionist, we have been educating our chefs and customers in a number of ways including providing one-to-one tuition, on site support, educational packs and roadshows.

We send out 3,000 fresh products a day from our central production unit, so making small alterations to our food is making a big difference. Changing from real mayonnaise to low fat mayonnaise will create a fat reduction of 25.7kg for 2013, and by using unsalted butter, where possible, we will reduce salt usage by 27.7kgs for 2013.

We are sourcing low salt alternatives for certain products and also providing top tips and ideas about how to reduce salt and use alternative flavourings without having to compromise on taste. Our chefs get a monthly marketing pack filled with low salt recipes and inspiration, regular group sessions and one-to-one meetings.

We publish and distribute leaflets for customers at our sites with information about water, fruit & veg, the “eat well” plate and Guideline Daily Amounts. We encourage healthy eating through several promotions and meal deals in our staff restaurants.Taking Nourish & Flourish one step further, we’ve developed our own smart phone app which allows customers to view key information about the food on offer such as fat, calorie and salt content, as well as keep a food diary.
