F1. Out of Home Energy (kJ/kcal) Labelling

Submitted: 10 April, 2013
The Merlin group first began labelling menus with the calorie content per portion in 2008, at our theme parks, Legoland Windsor, Chessington, Thorpe Park and Alton Towers. It has continued since then, been extended to more food outlets at each park and also rolled out to our hotels and to Warwick Castle.
We aim to show calorie labelling for plated meals and increasingly for snacks, drinks and other quick-service foods. This will show the calories and joules per portion, and for buffets, per indicated serving. Lower calorie options will be highlighted, so that customers are encouraged to make healthier choices throughout their day.
The calorie labelling is clearly and prominently shown on the menu boards, that is, before the point of choice, and where appropriate also on other signage, literature and webpages.
The analyses are being carried out for us by a registered dietitian, taking account of our ingredients as well as cooking and serving processes, and using the latest nutritional software and dataset.
