Marks and Spencer were part of the original calorie work of the Food Standards Agency. In 2009, after a succesful pilot, we added calorie labelling to the price tickets across our cafes (over 280 outlets). Products with calorie labelling include sandwiches, salads and cakes. Our hospitality offer includes a number of different eating formats including deli bar and hot food on the move where we sisplay information on menu boards or menus. We have launched a trial of calorie labeling on menu boards in January 2012 to gain a better understanding of how best to presnet this information to the consumer. We then plan to extend this labelling to all menu boards throughout 2012, although this may change due to the food information regulation and the requirement for providing both calorie and KJ information, we do not have the space to do this. Hopefully the Department of Health will be able to find a pragmatic solution to this.
