Unit reductionAs well as signing up to the industry pledge to remove one billion units from annual consumption by December 2015, Accolade Wines issued its own specific commitment to remove 25m units from its Californian Rosé portfolio. This encompasses Echo Falls Rosé, Echo Falls White Zinfandel, Stowells Rosé and Jack Rabbit White Zinfandel. Our winemakers will gradually reduce the ABV of each of these wines by one per cent by 2015. This will be done through natural, traditional winemaking techniques, such as the earlier picking of grapes.It is important this is a gradual process as we need to ensure there is no reduction in taste or quality. Therefore it is likely we will reduce by 0.5% per vintage over the next two vintages to ensure we hit the 25m unit mark by December 2015. We are confident we can meet our twin objectives of unit reduction and retention of quality this is mainly because of the level of high residual sugar in our rosé portfolio; this makes it easier to control the flavour at lower ABV levels. Light In August 2011 Accolade Wines launched a range of lower alcohol wines onto the market Banrock Station Light and Stowells Light. The two brands both have white and rosé varietals and are 5.5% ABV. Both brands have met with a great degree of success since launch, with the brands between them scoring listings in the four off-trade retailers, and Banrock Station Light getting listings across the on-trade such as in the Marstons Pub Company estate. The Light concept is one that Accolade Wines firmly supports and will be looking to increase marketing investment over the next financial year.
