P5. Physical Activity Inclusion

Committed since:

1 January, 2013

Delivery plan:

Submitted: 20 December, 2011

At its Uxbridge site General Mills UK runs a mobile youth bus scheme to provide a mobile youth centre for the children and teenagers in the Borough of Hillingdon, given the closure of the more traditional static ones. In addition to the range of activities provided, during the summer school holiday the bus becomes a focal point for physical activity where there is a lack of sporting facilities. At its Berwick site General Mills runs the Berwickshire Connect Project which links isolated voluntary sector youth projects in order that they may reach out to needy communities not served at present. The project aims to treat rural isolation which, among other issues, involves very limited access to leisure facilities. A focus of the project is to deliver and integrate a range of physical activities into the service provided to these isolated communities. Also at the Berwick site General Mills works with local schools. The Grove School for Mentally Disadvantaged Children work has a specific focus on physical fitness and wellbeing as the boys are encouraged to 'get fit' and improve their lifestyle which includes participation in a specially designed programme at the sports centre. The Tweedmouth West School work focuses on getting the children out into 'the field' for outdoor activities.
