A7(a). Community Actions to Tackle Alcohol Harms

We, alongside Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands, Heineken and Molson Coors commit to working with the BII (British Institute of Innkeeping) and the Home Office to support the continuation and further development of the Best Bar None scheme for at least the next three years. We will invest jointly at least £500,000 (commencing May 2011) and add a further 20 schemes in that time. We have committed to funding and supporting the national Purple Flag scheme for a period of three years from 2010 - 2012.We will join others to expand the reach of community alcohol partnerships (CAPs) in the UK through an investment of at least £800,000 by alcohol retailers and producers over the next three years . This will allow us to significantly increase the number of CAP schemes in local communities and extend the remit of caps beyond tackling under-age sales to wider alcohol-related harm. Diageo's funding commitment is £30,000 per annum for each of the next three years.We fund and support street pastor schemes in Nottingham, Bury, Portsmouth, Headingley, Doncaster, Dunfermline, Falkirk and are currently in discussion with Brentwood in Essex to establish a scheme there.We are working with West Yorkshire police to support street pastors in Headingley and deliver 'Operation Northdale'. This project ensures engagement with people who are entering the night time economy in an effort to change people's behaviour and attitude. This includes daytime engagement with shoppers, supported by the five big retail outlets in West Yorkshire allowing volunteers to operate in their premises, and evening engagement as people arrive in town and city centres from bus and train stations. Over two years, West Yorkshire police recorded a 71% reduction in serious sexual offences in the target areas.We are working with Cheltenham police and the Cheltenham Community Safety Partnership to make the annual Cheltenham Gold Cup a safe and enjoyable environment for the 200,000 attendees over the 4 day festival. We fund a bluetooth messaging unit for the police to send out safety and responsible drinking message to 12,000 racegoers. We also provid funding for late night taxi marshals, mounted police, free water for the public, safety posters and messaging throughout the festival. In 2011, incidents of criminal damage fell by 27% from last year, violence against the person by 22% and rowdy behaviour by 10%.
