A7(a). Community Actions to Tackle Alcohol Harms
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 1 September, 2015
Please describe how you have supported local community activity to tackle alcohol's social and health harms, over the last year (2000 characters limit):
BII supports Best Bar None, a national scheme promoting responsible licensed retail management, aiming to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder, as well as alcohol related hospital-admissions. BII's CEO, Tim Hulme is also CEO of Best Bar None, ensuring that BII has full involvement with the scheme, and encourages members to join up to schemes in their area, and to operate responsibly within their community to reduce alcohol related harms
Through our regular communication channels, the BII has promoted the Responsibility Deal to our members including featuring updates in our quarterly magazine and weekly e-briefings reaching over 8,000 professionals across the licensed hospitality sector. In addition, an update on the Responsibility Deal has been provided to our governing Board and through its extensive networks, our chief executive and senior management team regularly give presentations to member and non-member audiences setting out the added value of participating in the Deal, which include inter alia, allowing companies to achieve health outcomes which are recognised and supported by consumers, but which importantly do not bring about additional costs, which is implied by the legislation.
Where appropriate, the Deal has also been discussed at our regional events, of which there are 20 per year and attended by various stakeholders who operate across the licensed hospitality supply chain. As part of an on-going procurement project of suppliers, the BII will include commitments to the Responsibility Deal by signing pledge F9 (Salt Reduction) as part of the pre-qualification process.
