H9. Domestic Violence

Please describe measures you have taken to ensure that an appropriate, safe and sensitive response can be implemented to support your staff in response to experience of stalking, violence or abuse in their lives, which has an effect on people in the workplace.
DECC recently signed the pledge on domestic violence in December 2014. Since then we have joined the Corporate Alliance Against Domestic Violence (January 2015) and established a domestic violence support group (March 2015) made up of volunteers from across the department to ensure that anyone who wishes to discuss domestic violence issues affecting them may do so confidentially and in person. The group is currently undergoing its support worker training with a view to being launched to staff as a service in Summer 2015.
We have also consulted with our new Employee Assistance Programme provider CiC to ensure that the new 2015 offering had robust and meaningful support on domestic violence for our staff. That new offering was launched in March 2015.
In April 2015 the Corporate Alliance Against Domestic Violence provided ‘practitioner support’ training to key staff in the DECC HR team. The training covered what to do if staff contacted those key workers and what support could be provided to line managers in the event of domestic violence being reported.
Our aims for the coming months in 2015 are to:
• host an event aimed at promoting the elimination of violence against women
• launch the DECC Domestic Violence Support Group
• develop a departmental policy on domestic violence
• continue to raise awareness of domestic violence and the support available outside and inside DECC
