H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 11 May, 2015
Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
We maintain regular communication with stores to give continued guidance on how they can offer healthier options in both the hot serve over and vending offers; this includes a quarterly healthy recipe from our corporate magazine. The Asda Home Office colleague restaurant also displays posters and offers leaflets to raise awareness of healthy eating practices.
We continue to work with caterers to reformulate recipes to provide meals which are lower in fat, salt, and energy and which do not contain artificial trans fats with an in-house programme that has a large bank of recipes from company chefs and nutritional experts with a big focus on the above. We have successfully trialled the use of lo-salt as an alternative to regular salt sachets and in doing so removed 1.3kg sodium per week from colleagues’ diets.
We ensure that healthier foods and beverages are always available to colleagues, through all catering channels. A choice of healthy options is available daily for all meal occasions. We provide and promote the consumption of fruit and vegetables through availability and price promotion by making fresh and pre-packed fruit available and providing vegetables on our hot counters daily. All products are portioned to a responsible standard and all colleagues are trained on portion control. We also provide a range of beverages, including healthier options, which are clearly signposted, and water is available both freely in the form of water fountains and to purchase in bottles.
Following the introduction of the FIC regulations in December 2014 all posters, leaflets and other printed material displays are FIC compliant. We provide MTL and RI information on all packaged products and we have undertaken a roll out programme of shelf edge labelling, covering breakfast items, hot lunch, salad bar and sandwich stations and snack items in our smaller Home Office outlets.
