H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 30 April, 2015
Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
By December 2015, EAT@NEWCASTLE aims to source all meat and dairy products from higher welfare production systems, including RSPCA Freedom Food, organic or equivalent. We do not include any fish on the menus currently on the Marine Conservation Society’s red list and promote only fish that is on the MCS ‘fish to eat’ list. We aim to achieve MSC accreditation in all catering outlets during 2015.
Catering outlets will work to maintain existing accreditations, continually strive to improve standards and work towards further appropriate accreditations. Newcastle University is a Fairtrade University. All catering outlets hold the highest hygiene ratings possible from the Institute of Environmental Health. Catering outlets across the University have been awarded the Heart of Newcastle Award which recognises the availability of healthy options and high standards of hygiene. We continue to hold the CIWF Good Egg Award and carry the Soil Association’s Bronze Catering Mark in 12 of our outlets.
We are working towards an Excellence Green Impact award with an initiative for an “Edible Campus”. Green Impact is an environmental accreditation and award scheme run by the National Union of Students. The aim is to bring together staff and students to green campuses, curriculums and communities across the country. Since March 2014, we have implemented processes to divert food waste from disposal via landfill and maceration to recycling for renewable energy by anaerobic digestion.
The University holds the Better Health at Work Award which recognises the efforts of workplaces in actively promoting the health of employees. The University holds the Continuing Excellence Level and we support this through promoting national campaigns such as Salt Awareness Week and Fruity Friday.
