1 January, 2013
Submitted: 30 April, 2015
Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
In 2014 we have continued to work with our catering partners to offer healthier eating choices and to encourage our employees to make healthier food choices whilst at work.
Our Milton Keynes factory has expanded the vending options available to our production shift workers to include healthier options such as fresh organic soups and meal pots. These changes have resulted in a 67% growth in total food sales at the site since June 2014. Employees are able to view a product’s full ingredients list and full nutritional information, including a traffic light format for salt, fat and sugar content, before they make a final purchase. At our Cumbernauld site our canteen and vending service continue to provide food and snacks to approximately 55% of our total workforce. Our contract catering partners continue to deliver and develop their successful Eat Well, Live Well service, providing healthy options for our employees. High quality, freshly prepared homemade food, using locally sourced produce where possible, is prepared from a choice of over 1,500 recipes, all analysed by a nutritionist. Menus show the portion size and reference intakes for calories, salt, fat and sugar content in each dish, together with the unique “3, 2, 1” heart grading system which signposts the healthier options. The canteen has also maintained its Healthy Living Award, a nationally recognised catering accreditation for the provision of healthy eating options. Our ‘Grab and Go’ food offer, which is predominantly purchased from vending machines by our shift employees, was also re-launched in 2014 and included the introduction of healthier salad boxes, pasta and fruit pots. The relaunch resulted in a 300% increase in ‘Grab and Go’ food purchases. Circa 8% of our employees work from our Middlebrook regional office where we provide a food vending service. Low fat sandwiches are available (<300 cals) and the new front of pack labelling scheme is being rolled out across the product range sold.
