H3. Health & Wellbeing Report
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 29 April, 2015
Please describe how you report on the health and wellbeing of your employees, including annual sickness rates
A new procedure for reporting sickness absence in our office-based workers was rolled out across all UK sites during 2012. All affected employees and their Line Managers were briefed on the new policy and the new procedures for reporting sickness absence. The HR and Occupational Health (OH) teams collaborated on this project which was successfully delivered and well received.
As a consequence of this new approach to reporting and recording sickness absence, the business is able to maintain more accurate records of absence amongst the office-based population. Weekly and monthly reports on sickness absence are produced which allow trends in sickness absence to be carefully monitored at an individual, departmental and company-wide level.
The availability of this information enables HR and OH staff to support Line Managers when dealing with cases of short-term and long-term sickness absence.
During 2014, the OH team caried out some benchmarking with other large manufacturing companies in the Midlands area. This resulted in some changes to the way we manage long-term sickness absence with an emphasis on getting more involvement from line managers. We have also implemented early intervention strategies for employees absent from work due to musculoskletal or mental health problems. At one of our manufacturing sites, this has contributed to a 35% reduction in the overall level of sickness absence.
We continue to look at best practice and focus on making progress in this area.
