A3. Awareness of Alcohol Units, Calories & other information in the Off-trade
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 29 April, 2015
Please describe how you have promoted awareness of alcohol units, calorie content, NHS drinking guidelines and the associated health harms in the off-trade, over the last year (2000 characters limit):
We have continued with our promotion of responsible drinking both to our staff and customers.
All new members of staff are provided with materials which deal with responsible drinking. Our in-house Education Team has developed a bespoke presentation which is given as part of new staff induction which focuses on social responsibility. This covers the minimum age to purchase alcohol, BAC limits, maximum recommended daily/weekly limits for men and women and why such recommendations are made. The length of and detail contained in this presentation has increased since last year. All staff are encouraged to study WSET level 2 and beyond which deals with responsible drinking as part of the course. These courses are also offered to our customers. Our shops have launched their own retail-specific WSET training programme which also covers alcohol awareness.
We have the "responsibility grid" on all of our own brand wine labels detailing units and CMO warnings. We have a hyperlink to the drinkaware.com website on every page within our Group's websites and on all our outgoing emails. Our websites also list the percentage of alcohol and the number of units in each bottle of wine. We have also added a section to our website this year that gives customers information on allergens. Our catalogue (sent to customers by post and available at our stores) carries the drinkaware.com logo. It also includes the 'responsibility grid' and has been updated to include information on sulphites. We offer wine tasting events as well as wine courses to our customers at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced level, all of which contain responsible drinking sections. Our shops display unit information.
