Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust remains committed to supporting staff with Chronic Health Conditions and those with caring responsibilities.
The Occupational Health Practitioners and Clinical Ergonomic team continue to support employees and managers in making workplace adjustments to support health needs. Our staff Counsellor uses a Mindfullness approach to support staff returning to work. The organisation continues where possible to offer a range of flexible working options such as part time, flexi hours, amended duties, working from home job redeployment. Phased supported return to work following absence is planned for staff and is now paid for a period of 4 weeks.
Staff can self-refer to Occupational Health and the Department is able to undertake some regular blood tests needed by some staff with chronic health conditions to save them needing to take time away from work to attend their GP practice. Counselling support is available for staff and access to them or the Occupational Health Nurses is arranged quickly when needed by staff that may be experiencing a ‘dip’ in their emotional well-being. The Occupational Health Department encourages early contact from staff with chronic health conditions if they are developing any changes to their health that is having an impact on work to enable changes (often short term) to be made to work patterns to help employees remain at work.
The Trust is piloting a scheme to support managing attendance work where an extra post has been funded in Occupational Health, HR and a half time staff Physiotherapist to provide appointments solely for employees. This additional input has meant Occupational Health and Physiotherapy appointments can be provided early for staff and there is greater access to HR support for managers and employees when planning workplace return or changes.
