P4. Physical Activity in the Workplace
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 27 April, 2015
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
All schemes originally reported are still active with the introduction of 2 new initiatives a Body Conditioning Class and Harris Health & Fitness, a Personal Trainer helping staff to lose weight and increase their health and fitness through simple changes to their lifestyle. Staff sign-up and receive a healthy nutrition plan and exercise programme tailored specifically to them at NHS discounted rate.
In January the Trust was lucky enough to pilot Fit For 15 a new platform created by NHS Sport & Physical Activity Challenge to help staff at BHRUT to increase their physical activity levels through fun short and long-term challenges. Designed to be accessible to all staff the challenges catered for everyone regardless of physical ability or work patterns. Running from January to March 91 members of staff took up this initiative.
57 members of staff signed-up to the yearly 'Walk to Work' week initiative in May 2014 closely followed by 'Bike to work' in June where 36 members of staff pledged to cycle to work for the week. 'On yer Bike' cycling event was arranged by the H&WB service during Cycle to Work Week in June 2014 and included input from the Police, local Council and Dr Bike. The event provides help and advice for all staff cycling or thinking about cycling to work together with promoting the health benefits of making this simple change.
The Trust entered 27 Teams in the 2014 Global Corporate Challenge. Over the course of the 16 week challenge, 189 employees walked, swam and cycled an average of 14,715 steps per day, a huge improvement on the 3,000 daily step count of an average worker not only improving the employees physical activity but building great team spirit within the trusts departments.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Please estimate the number of your employees who participated in your workplace physical activity programmes over the last year and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
Has the number of your employees participating in your workplace physical activity programmes increased since last year? If unknown, please explain why.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
