1 January, 2013
Submitted: 27 April, 2015
Please describe how you have encourged your staff to stop smoking and reduced other risks in the workplace to respiratory health over the last year. There is a 2000 character limit when completing this section.
Many of our staff and patients found it frustrating when people are smoking outside the hospitals’ entrances. From 11 March 2015 BHRUT became Smoke-Free. Whether you are a patient, visitor, contractor or member of staff, you will not be allowed to smoke on any of our sites. The Smoking Cessation group has introduced a new Smoke Free Policy and in conjunction with the Communication Team Yellow Cards have been produced for staff to hand out to smokers asking them to smoke off-site and offering them help if they wish to stop.
The Trust has also signed up to the NHS Statement of Support for Tobacco Control and has pledged to support the local government in their work and to help fulfil on-going commitments outline in the NHS Five year Forward View to reduce the impact of smoking on health.
Patients at all appointments are asked to complete a form if they are interested in giving up smoking. The Clinicians in the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service Level I and II Smoking Cessation trained giving them the skills and knowledge needed to provide intensive one to one stop smoking advice to employees who would like to stop smoking. The Admin Team are also Level I trained as an added benefit for first point of contact. We also work in partnership with the local Smoking Cessation advisors to ensure swift response to any requests for support. All recent health promotion events have included a smoking cessation stand. Monthly figures are reported on and include the numbers of those identified and those wishing to quit. Smoking Cessation Posters with tear-off contact details sent to every ward and department within the Trust promoting this initiative. In patients are offered nicotine patches during their stay and offered support to stop smoking .
