P5. Physical Activity Inclusion

Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
The BMC has an Equity Steering Group. A large part of the group's work involves looking at barriers that under-represented groups face in discovering and participating in climbing, hill walking and mountaineering and suggesting strategies for removing those barriers. Its main areas of focus are people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities, people with disabilities, and women. This year the group has also started to look at ways it can incorporate support for people with mental health problems, and promote the mental health benefits of outdoor recreation generally.
Each year, the BMC holds an ongoing series of symposia which aim to tackle the barriers and inequalities that prevent some groups from being active. In 2015, the BMC Equity Symposium, Developing Outdoor Leadership Event, aims to equip people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to become outdoor leaders and role models in BAME communities. It aims to build on the groundwork laid down by a similar event held in Haworth in 2014. Participants are encouraged to take follow-up courses or qualifications with Mountain Training after the event to ensure their participation is sustained.
2015 also sees the second BMC Disability Symposium, which is intended to give people the skills and support they need to introduce people with disabilities to adventurous activities. Read a very positive report by following the link below.
The Equity Steering Group also gives financial support to the annual Womens Climbing Symposium, held this year in Glasgow, and has sponsored the 2015 Women in Mountain Adventure Film competition, which is a female film making competition run in conjunction with the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.

Regional Development Team - In 2012 (to 2017) the BMC appointed four regional development officers whose primary objectives are to support people wanting to climb outside and to help clubs attract new members, aimed primarily at 18-25 year olds. The team work closely with local climbing walls, clubs and the community to encourage more young adults into physical activity.

310 people attended the BMC Equity Symposium 2014, the BMC Disability Symposium and the Womens Climbing Symposium.

The BMC has encouraged increased participation in physical activity amongst the following groups - Women, Men, Older adults (65+), Children & young people, Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities, Disabled People and People from deprived communities.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
It is difficult to assess the number of people who actively go on to increase their participation in physical activity. However, in the past 12 months, 10,292 new people have joined the BMC including 508 children & young people and 178 older adults. 5 new climbing and mountaineering clubs have also joined who represent another 1800 climbers, walkers and mountaineers.
Since 2012 there has been a 20% increase in the number of people entering BMC climbing competitions (over the past 12 months this has increased again by another 2%). In particular, the number of people entering the BMC Paraclimbing Series over the past 12 months has more than doubled. Over the past 12 months, 1913 people of all ages and abilities entered BMC competitions.
Similarly, statistics from Plas y Brenin (the National Mountain Sports Centre) show that the number of people participating in BMC outdoor activity courses has more than doubled in the past 12 months (the BMC Ready to Rock courses and the BMC Winter Skills courses were most popular) with 250 more people participating than the previous year.
Currently climbing walls do not publicise statistics and assessing the increase in numbers climbing, mountaineering and hill walking outdoors remains difficult.
