P2. Physical Activity Guidelines

Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
Active Outdoors - BMC Active Outdoors programme offers subsidised courses for those interested in starting hill walking, rock climbing & scrambling. This has been updated for 2015 /16.
Get into Climbing - this is a special edition magazine which features advice on how to start climbing & how to take the first steps towards climbing outdoors. The magazine is on sale through the BMC &WHSmith. Currently we have sold over 3000 copies.
BMC TV - this is an on-line video channel which brings together walking, climbing & mountaineering content. A number of short films exist to try & encourage more people to be active including films such as how to scramble & walking in the winter hills.
This Girl Can - BMC supports the Sport England This Girl Can Campaign. We have produced a number of on-line articles & campaigns in support of this initiative including a This Girl Can Instagram competition, free beginners guide to climbing for all women & a Women In Mountain Adventure film competition.
Outdoor climbing courses - BMC currently runs 2 types of indoor to outdoor rock climbing courses. 'Rock Out' is run in conjunction with climbing walls around the country & 'Ready to Rock' takes place at Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Centre in Wales. Ready to Rock offers courses specifically tailored to young people and families.
Outdoor festivals & BMC events - a series of climbing & hill walking festivals are organised around the country by BMC local area volunteers. The BMC also has a list of events that is regularly updated.
BMC will continue to promote the health benefits of physical activity through our website & on social media.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Regional Development Team - In 2012 (to 2017) the BMC appointed four regional development officers whose primary objectives are to support people wanting to climb outside and to help clubs attract new members, aimed primarily at 18-25 year olds. The team work closely with local climbing walls, clubs and the community to encourage more young adults into physical activity.
The revised Chief Medicial Officers (CMO) guidelines provide physical activity recommendations for four distinct age groups. From the following list, please indicate the age groups you have focused on in disseminating the guidelines (if unknown, please explain why):
Early years (under 5s), Children & young people (5-18), Adults (19-64), Older adults (65+)
Adults and Older Adults - Get into Climbing Magazine, the This Girl Can Campaign, the Outdoor Climbing Courses as well as the BMC festivals and events are primarily targeted at adults and older adults.
Children & Young people - The BMC has produced a free guide for parents of children who are interested in participating in climbing related activities. The BMC also run the BMC Youth Climbing Series which attracts over 800 young climbers of all levels to take part. We have also produced a short film called New Kids on the Rock supporting the BMC Youth Climbing series.
Children & Young people - BMC Ambassadors scheme. The BMC has signed up eight inspirational ambassadors to act as role models to inspire and engage young climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers.
Please estimate the number of people reached through your activities on this pledge and explain how you arrived at this estimate:
It is difficult to assess the number of people reached through our website campaigns and literature. However, in the past 12 months, 10,292 new people have joined the BMC including 508 children & young people and 178 older adults. 5 new climbing and mountaineering clubs have also joined who represent another 1800 climbers, walkers and mountaineers.

We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
Since 2012 there has been a 20% increase in the number of people entering BMC climbing competitions (over the past 12 months this has increased again by another 2%). In particular, the number of people entering the BMC Paraclimbing Series over the past 12 months has more than doubled. Over the past 12 months, 1913 people of all ages and abilities entered BMC competitions.
Similarly, statistics from Plas y Brenin (the National Mountain Sports Centre) show that the number of people participating in BMC outdoor activity courses has more than doubled in the past 12 months (the BMC Ready to Rock courses and the BMC Winter Skills courses were most popular) with 250 more people participating than the previous year.
Currently climbing walls do not publicise statistics and assessing the increase in numbers climbing, mountaineering and hill walking outdoors remains difficult.
