H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants

Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
We work with a number of catering providers across our sites, with the majority being serviced by Compass – part of the world’s largest food service & support services. Like Britvic, they joined the Responsibility Deal in 2011 so we have been working together during this time to ensure continuous improvement across our staff restaurants, as well as providing employee education and learning:-
Having introduced GDA information across sites last year & following insight that 1 in 5 people aim to reduce fat in their diets, Compass reduced the number of high fat dishes by 6%, equating to 60,000 dishes across their business. As their front line catering staff have all been trained in the importance of health & wellbeing, we have worked with them to set up ‘nutritional drop-ins’ at some of our staff restaurants – delivered by our Chefs & CSR team as employees indicated needing more advice around healthy eating. The drop-ins take the format of a breakfast or lunch ‘sample & learn’ - inviting employees to come & taste some healthier options whilst learning more about healthier diets. At Beckton we had people tucking into natural greek yoghurt & granola, and poached egg rolls – trying things they had not thought of buying before. As we progress more of these sessions, this will give our employees the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ – and trialing something healthier than their usual choice.
2 of our sites – HO & Distribution at Lutterworth have had their staff canteens refurbished & we used this as a perfect opportunity to introduce more up to date healthier menus & promote ideas such as ‘chips only on Fridays.’ So far the feedback has been hugely positive.
We offer a mix of vending & low fat yoghurts are proving a favourite whilst a mix of fruit, cereal bars, baked crisps, dietary snacks from vegan/vegetarian to wheat/dairy free are available at Head Office. Chillers offer a range of NAS drinks for employees, supported by poster messaging to stay hydrated.
