Please confirm that you are working towards or have an alcohol policy that promotes alcohol awareness across the workforce, discourages employees from drinking alcohol before or during working hours and supports individuals who drink at increasing or high risk levels to access support.
Laing O’Rourke now has a fully embedded drug & alcohol policy. Communication of the policy is done via our company / site induction process and we presently apply nationally recognized limits, and in some cases, project / client specific limits when testing for drugs / alcohol.
The types of testing undertaken consists of random & for cause testing. Locations selected for random testing is done via our Drug & Alcohol testing Provider with zero input from Laing O’Rourke. This ensures that the selection process is done fairly and ensures all locations are subjected to random visits.
In order to raise awareness of issues associated with misuse of drugs & alcohol, we have included these subjects within the Laing O’Rourke “Building a healthier Lifestyle” one day course. The key subjects covered are; The psychological and physiological effects and consequences of excessive alcohol and drug use on the mind and body; Recommended and/or accepted ‘safe’ limits; Home measures vs. pub measures.
As part of the course, attendees are asked to pour into a standard glass what they would consider to be a fair representation of what they would pour if they were having a drink at home. These measures are then transferred into a measuring glass that shows how many units this measure represents. Attendees are given a measuring glass to take away with them along with a card that can be used to calculate how many calories various types of alcoholic drinks contain. We have received excellent feedback from a number of individuals stating that they intend to reduce their alcohol intake as a result of attending the course.
We also understand that some individual may require help / assistance in order to address excessive drinking. In order to help with this, Laing O’Rourke have arrangements in please so affected persons can seek confidential via our “Confidence in Care” (CiC) employee assistance program that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. This is a free service that we are presently looking to expand / make available to our subcontractors. In addition to providing help associated with misuse of alcohol / drugs. The service can also provide help / advice regarding, dealing with debit, consumer rights, managing stress, balancing personal and work challenges.
