H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 31 March, 2015
Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
Staff at City College Norwich have a wide choice of places to eat on site. Some outlets are run by the contract catering provider, some as a training facility operated by students and one is a lounge for staff only, run by the College’s Staff Association. More recently, a coffee bar has opened in the Start-Up Lounge run entirely by students and offers another place for people to gain access to a range of beverages.
Despite the variety of restaurants available, all outlets subscribe to the commitment to offer healthy eating options to staff (and students and visitors). The catering provider offers only a very limited selection of crisps and chocolate in its cafes and always has special offers on water. Fresh fruit is always available. Each day the provider offers a choice of hot meals and vegetables and salad are now always available as sides to these meals. The amount of fresh food provided by the catering provider does not drop below 90% and averages at 94% and dairy, bread, vegetables and meat are sourced from local suppliers. During holiday periods, the on-site caterer provides a limited menu in light of its take-up during that time. Regular review meetings are held with the catering provider and information is provided to HR to assess their performance in relation to the Responsibility Deal Pledge.
The other outlets on site run by the College’s Hospitality students as part of their training offer an extensive salad bar and smoothies, as well as hot meals with fresh vegetables available every day during term time and is also open for some periods during the College holidays.
The Staff Association Lounge now opens during the holiday period to ensure staff working have access to healthy hot and cold options.
