H5. Smoking Cessation/Respiratory Health

Please describe how you have encourged your staff to stop smoking and reduced other risks in the workplace to respiratory health over the last year. There is a 2000 character limit when completing this section.
Following the up-skilling of one of our Occupational Health Nurse Advisors who is now a level 2 trained Smoking Cessation practitioner, a dedicated service has been provided to staff through confidential 1:1 appointments. This advisory and supportive service is available Trust wide at various locations each week. To date, three members of staff have been able to quit smoking using these sessions. In addition there are ten members of staff who are presently attending the sessions with five of these now about half way through the programme.
More and more employees are becoming interested and the OH Nurse is receiving about three enquiries a week from people interested in joining a group.
The Trust has also joined forces with local Smoking Cessation advisors county-wide to ensure that support is easily accessible across our wide geographical area (7,500 sq miles). The Trusts Health and Wellbeing Champions are being offered the opportunity to become level 1 smoking cessation advisors to assist colleagues in their localities to stop smoking. Regular health promotion materials about smoking cessation are distributed to all staff, via our intranet, posters and payslip attachments. Regular communications are also issued, e.g. in our staff bulletins. The Trust and its Board are committed to promoting a smoke free environment. All Trust premises and grounds are declared as non-smoking areas. The Trust has a No Smoking Policy which informs staff that non-smoking is the expected standard for employees on Trust premises. The Trust promotes the known risks to peoples health from smoking and incorporates actions within its the Health and Wellbeing Programme to develop and encourage a healthier lifestyle for all its employees. It is the Trusts aim to:- Support employees to stop smoking;- Encourage employees to get involved in health promotion initiatives;- Set a good example to the public and enhance the image of the Trust through the positive actions of employees;- Demonstrate adherence to the NHS-wide No Smoking principle;- Adhere to National No Smoking in line with Health Act 2006.
