H6. Staff Health Checks

Health and Wellbeing has developed as part of the Trust culture by providing a varied number of initiatives to Trust staff on a regular basis. The first initiatives undertaken involved booking lifestyle assessment with Occupational Health (OH) offering one to one assessment and lifestyle advice. Overtime these strategies have developed in order to ensure staff take a proactive approach to looking after their own health. OH has put together a range of educational and practical activities, along with providing a range of health promotion literature with different focuses to meet the needs of staff. Currently, OH is involved in a number of activities:
Healthy NumbersOH runs a weekly “Healthy Numbers” clinic, in which staff can turn up and keep a track of their blood pressure, weight, BMI and cholesterol and information is provided to staff to raise awareness of their own health and wellbeing.
Ward Walkabouts / Summertime MOT’sSummertime MOTs and ward walkabouts are events taken to the clinical area where OH interacts with staff that find it difficult due to their work commitments to attend the department and gives them the chance to have health checks like healthy numbers and receive general advice. It is also a really good opportunity for the OH team to hear more about some of the pressures affecting the health and wellbeing of clinical staff and can continue to provide appropriate health and wellbeing activities and find new ways to support staff.
Mental HealthOur Trust is involved in acknowledging the emotional and mental health needs: mental ill health is said to affect one in four people over the course of their working lives and we know that stress, as well as fatigue, can make people more vulnerable. The Trust has recently launched ‘Schwartz Rounds’, which offers a chance for staff to come together and reflect on their experiences of delivering care and for some provides an outlet to help them cope with difficult or pressurised situations. Staff also have access to pre-arranged events on ‘Healthy Minds’ and Resilience and Staff have been given continued access to training and tools for resilience.
Calendar of eventsEach year a calendar of Health and Wellbeing events is arranged and promoted with annual events supported by national initiatives such as Work out at Work. These have involved a Pilates Master Class, Chair Aerobics and Gym Ball Sessions which are also taken into work areas. This year a competition was set up between the Trusts site to undertake a static cycle exercise for the fastest kilometre completed, most staff participation and the most amount of kilometres covered.
Back to Basics
‘Back to Basics’ forms another annual event for staff to access to improve their health, with low back pain advice information on ‘how to sit properly ‘and’ how to stand properly’, along with warm up at work exercise for staff groups to embrace prior to commencing duties.
Health and wellbeing in the organisation does need to be led from the top. Managers receive training on supporting staff with sickness and in the majority of cases when an individual is unwell, their manager will be sensitive and discreet and will support arrangements to allow the individual to recover and to return to work in good health. Occupational Health support both employees and the organisation with impartial advice on health and work.
The Trust supports the message that it is easy to look after others whilst neglecting our own health it is really important that we encourage and support each other to stay well, not forgetting that we have a personal responsibility about our actions and influence on our health.
