Submitted: 1 July, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
We have worked with a number of companies in assisting the delivery of physical activity in the workplace. This includes Oracle, Royal College of Nursing, Department of Health and a number of County Sports Partnerships have used our bespoke Corporate Wellbeing programmes e.g Oxfordshire, Northants, East Dorset and Hounslow.
Once the employees have completed a behavioural change 4 week programme based around fitness walking, the employees are issued with a competence Freedom Card. This allows them to participate in a Nationwide coverage of classes.
We attend Corporate Wellbeing conferences and use direct marketing to HR departments
We recently attended the Oxfordshire Corporate games and trialled an innovative "Biathlon" competition with 16 teams using Nordic Walking poles and Nerf guns, simulating the winter biathlon competition. This is something we will be using more in the corporate environment as a way to grab peoples attention.
Our team has also created a sustainable workplace delivery package which incorporates training for an in house walk leader/activator and the option to include activity tracking and team challenges.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
We support over 200 local projects with marketing toolkits, management systems, central promotion and a range of tools from activity tracking solutions to PR
Our own website gains over 1 m hits per year predominantly from those in the 40+ age group.
Our bespoke programmes are designed to help instructors and projects to encourage those new to physical activity. These include a 30 day intervention 'Learn to Nordic walk' programme which incorporates behaviour change and a wellbeing programme which is designed to help older adults to remain mobile. We are launching a care homes stability for mobility programme, Young explorers family fitness and an effective walking plan later this year.
We retail walking and wellbeing equipment and ensure our projects are able to either remain sustainable via commissions on sales or can pass on the discounts to the participants.
We send regular newsletters to 40,000 adults with wellbeing information and articles about testimonials and other incentives.
We supply content and expert comments to other websites such as the Obesity society, workplace challenge, NHS direct and other charities.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
We support our programmes with funding applications by supplying testimonials, examples and outlines of sustainable models.
To date we have helped projects attract funding via National Lottery, Sport England, British Legion and other charities.
We are working with a cancer project in Dorset that will enable patients to participate in activity with a number of our instructors in the region. we co-ordinate the delivery, deal with the enquiries and centrally manage the programme.
We sit on steering committees like inspire and include ( Age UK) and have developed key qualifications to enable our projects to empower participants to be able to encourage their peers to be more active. these include a bespoke walking based Exercise referral diploma.
Please estimate the number of people that (a) participated in your community programmes:
10,000 plus with community programmes but an estimated further 30,000 with independent instructors
Please estimate the number of people that (b) were more active as a result of participating:
circa 8,000 in the community programmes - figures for independent instructors not known but significant due to the demographic and nature of our programmes.
Please explain how you arrived at these estimates (if unknown, please explain why):
Each project collects their own data but we do have a record of how many FREEDOM cards have been issued and our programmes include us in their retention records where possible. We are in the process of launching a new system which will provide accurate reporting on activity levels, retention and activity tracking. This will also provide projects with the tools to intervene if participants lapse and training will incorporate motivational solutions.
Please indicate which of the following demographic groups within the local community that you have worked with to promote increased participation in physical activity:
Women, Men, Older adults (65+), Children & young people, Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities, Disabled People, People from deprived communities, Other (please specify)
80% are aged between 45 and 65 years old and 70% are female. Projects range from Age UK Newham to Torbay NHS Trust.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
