H3. Health & Wellbeing Report

Since sign up to the health & wellbeing pledge Bernicia have introduced a range of measures to monitor and review staff health & wellbeing via the following initiatives;
â€¢ Quarterly Department Reports â€“ HR supply quarterly reports to update team leaders and mangers on team sickness/absenteeism levels on a quarterly basis. Feedback issued is treated in the strictest confidence and is used to introduce measures and provide necessary support should this be required by staff. Key information contained within quarterly reports includes sickness levels, duration of time taken, type of sickness, occupational health referrals, average day or time lost per team/department.
To help combat sickness levels and provide any necessary support monthly absence reports are supplied to managers to assist with monitoring sickness.
â€¢ Zurich Helpline â€“ Bernicia commission the services of Zurich for staff to access counselling services at any stage, all information is treat in the strictest of confidence.
â€¢ Occupational Health â€“ Bernicia have a dedicated in-house occupation health service to assist with staff health referrals carrying out a comprehensive review as and when requested. Upon appointment of a new member of staff a medical health questionnaire is issued to staff for completion, all forms are completed and returned direct to the occupation health team to recommend the relevant aid/adaptation. Since sign up to the Responsibility Deal we have made 14 aid and adaptations for staff which include ergonomic chairs, height adjustable desks, monitor stands and footrests. Additionally all staff at Bernicia have access to make a flexible working request, since sign up we have had 5 flexible working requests with adjustments made to work patterns.
â€¢ BHAW Award & Workplace Initiatives - Since sign up to the Responsibility Deal Pledge we have informed, consulted and continue to update staff on how we can improve staff health and wellbeing via our Bernicia Bulletin newsletter. Staff can also contact a member of the health and wellbeing team to put forward any suggestions or ideas. Since sign up to Better Health at Work we have introduced a range of initiatives such as;
- Cycle 2 Work Scheme â€“ Arranged for staff to hire a bike free of charge for a month at a time
- Yoga - delivered by an accredited British Wheel of Yoga teacher on site one day a week
- Keep Fit Classes â€“ delivered on site two days a week
- Health Checks/Weight Management â€“ Offered staff a free comprehensive health check service to group staff with a feedback report
Additionally staff at Bernicia have nominated themselves to get involved in key events such as Race for Life and the Newcastle Stampede raising money for the British Heart Foundation (10K boot camp style run) and have delivered a health campaign titled Healthy Heart Month.
Future Action at Bernicia (FAB) â€¦..
Our commitment to improving staff health and wellbeing does not stop here we encourage staff feedback at all times keeping lines of communication clear at all times. Some of our future actions which we hope to achieve within the next 6-12 months include: -
â€¢ Mindful Employer â€“ We have recently evidenced how we intend to meet commitments outlined in the Mindful Employer Charter and continue to use the logo. We aim to deliver training to managers and team leaders to help ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills required to support a member of staff with mental ill health.
Additionally we have recently appointed a training provider called Straight Forward to deliver training to housing officers on Resiliency to â€œhelp support frontline professionals to develop strategies for getting their heads into the right space when they arrive at work in the morning, and make exactly the same transition when they leave work at nightâ€ helping to reduce stress levels.
We have retained the positive two tick symbol â€œPositive about Disabled People since 2010 and continue to demonstrate that we are an employer who offer, develop and support staff with disabilities.
â€¢ Health Needs Assessment Survey Gold Award â€“ Following successful achievement of Better Health at Work bronze and silver award, Bernicia have progressed to the Gold level. As part of this process we will administer a health needs assessment to group staff to help capture areas where staff require further health related information and will tailor health campaigns to meet the needs of staff.
â€¢ Think Change - We have recently introduced an internal system called Think Change which allows staff to have a say in how Bernicia can develop and improve its working environment and suggest changes we can make to continue delivering customer excellence to both customers and colleagues.
â€¢ HR Review â€“ To further assist with improving our policy and procedure both internal and external we review feedback supplied from return to work and exit interviews and make changes deemed appropriate.
â€¢ Health Section - Consideration is being given to include a dedicated section on health & wellbeing on the group website which will be a central point for staff to obtain the following information;
- Employer & Employee responsibilities
- Sign post staff to key websites such as the Department of Health and Change 4 Life
- Health Eating Recipes
- Download free resources
- Post ideas on Think Change encouraging staff discussion
- Group Health & Safety Policy
