P5. Physical Activity Inclusion

Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
In June 2013, the CSP ran their biggest ever Workout at Work Day for the third year running, with more than 800 CSP members participating and organising more than 300 events. The day aimed to promote physical and mental wellbeing in the work environment and acted as a chance to remind people that overworking and poor posture can lead to musculoskeletal disorders and stress. To coincide with Workout at Work Day, a news story was issued with the results of a public opinion poll which outlined fears of working to a later retirement age and not being able to manage physically or mentally, alongside current levels of activity to prevent ill health.
Workout at Work Day resulted in extensive media coverage. Nationally this included BBC One Breakfast, BBC Radio Five Live, BBC Radio Twos Jeremy Vine Show and BBC News Online. National print coverage included The Daily Mail, Daily Mirror (x2), Daily Telegraph. In addition, the story featured in Metro London, Metro Scotland, The Western Mail, Daily Record, The Scotsman, and ITV Wales News. The story also generated international coverage following an interview by CSP Chief Executive Phil Gray on The BBC World Service World Today. In addition to Sky News Australia and Talk Radio South Africa, the story was covered by media in India, Russia, France, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, USA and Canada. Over 30 local radio stations also covered the story, along with regional and local newspapers and trade media. Our media evaluation confirmed nearly 500 pieces of media coverage were generated across the world as a result of Workout at Work Day.
To coincide with the media coverage, physiotherapy staff went into workplaces across the UK to encourage employees to be more physically active. In total 307 events took place, with employees and employers being shown easy, low-cost ways of developing and promoting healthier work habits.
Additionally, the musculoskeletal disorders and occupational health briefings from the CSP's Physiotherapy Works series were fully revised and available to download in July 2013.

For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Throughout 2013, the CSP highlighted areas of good practice in promoting public health in the community via the fortnightly publication, Frontline.

The physiotherapy workforce has a key role to play in the drive to increase physical activity levels across the population. While physiotherapists engage in primary prevention, delivering brief advice and brief interventions to individual and populations in order to prevent physical inactivity related ill health, a large proportion of the physiotherapy workforce specialise in managing patients with established chronic long term conditions and disabilities. These individuals often encounter barriers to undertaking physical activity and, as part of their overall management, physiotherapy staff work to reduce these barriers and maximise their participation in physical activity.
When planning Workout at Work Day events, physiotherapy staff ensured activities are inclusive and suitable for people of all ages and abilities, including people with mobility problems. The CSP's physical activity messages have appeared in a wide range of media and as such would have reached individuals for a broad cross-section of the community. An example of our messages reaching BME communities is through a live interview with Sunrise Radio - a station aimed at the Asian community, which reaches nearly two million Asian listeners per month, across the UK.
