1 January, 2013
Submitted: 14 May, 2014
Please describe how you have encourged your staff to stop smoking and reduced other risks in the workplace to respiratory health over the last year. There is a 2000 character limit when completing this section.
Cornwall Council have a Smoke Free Policy. The policy acknowledges that breathing other peoples smoke is proven to cause ill health and is both a public health hazard and a welfare issue. Smoking is prohibited in all buildings or within the boundary of buildings owned, rented or leased by the council, including in vehicles on council premises, or in hired or council owned vehicles at any time when they are on Council duty.
Tenders and contracts with Cornwall Council will stipulate adherence to this policy as a contractual condition.
Staff smoking areas that existed at some sites have been withdrawn.
Job advertisements include reference to the Smoke-Free policy and indicate that adherence will be mandatory.
Employees are supported to stop smoking and are allowed reasonable time-off during normal working hours (subject to operational requirements) to attend smoking cessation sessions run by the Stop Smoking Service.
