1 January, 2013
Submitted: 7 May, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
DWP continues to promote active travel amongst its employees in the following ways:
- DWP's Discount Scheme enables employees to buy bicycles/ gym membership/ fitness equipment at reduced rates
- DWP teams and individuals take part annually in the Charity for Civil Servants' Walking Challenge, Walk to Work Week, and local walking activities. All these encouage employees to walk to/ from/ part of the way to work, to go for a walk during lunch breaks and even to hold walking meetings rather than meetings sat round a table.
- DWP's Wellbeing policy and website promotes physical activity and awareness-raising activities in this area. For example, we promote links with Change4Life, Public Health England, local NHS partnerships, Sustrans, the Ramblers Organisation and many more. Promotion takes place at local onsite Wellbeing events; through headline news articles, and through our Intranet Wellbeing site. A range of advice and tools helps employees increase their activity levels and encourages to adopt active active travel practices at work or when travelling to work.
- DWP's Business Travel policy actively promotes sustainable travel, and encourages walking as part of business journeys.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Please estimate the number of your employees who report they are regularly using active modes of travel and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
We do not currently monitor the number of employees who use active modes of travel. However, information is available to all equally and our Wellbeing Champion network promote Active Travel regularly at local wellbeing events.
Has the number of your employees using active modes of travel increased since last year? If unkwown, please explain why:
Not recorded. However, anecdotal evidence from Wellbeing Champions indicates much more interest in this area.
If your active travel pledge activities have focused on customers or local communities, have you observed or measured any increases in active travel in these groups? If yes, please provide details and where you have been able to measure this please explain how you arrived at this estimate.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
As above, DWP's Wellbeing Champion network reports high levels of interest and participation in wellbeing/physical activity. People are taking up new sports, activities, hobbies, doing more walking (including lunchtime walking clubs, exercise groups etc), going to their local gym, taking up cycling etc. We are currently undertaking more work to gather data in this area.
