P2. Physical Activity Guidelines
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 25 April, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
Bounty continues to contribute to the aims of the Tommy's Five Point Pregnancy Plan as an excellent employer of pregnant women through the Tommy's Pregnancy Accreditation Programme.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
The Five Point Pregnancy Plan's online resource www.bounty.com/tommysplan continues to thrive and has had a total of over 68,000 page views and over 41,500 unique visitors.
We continue to email all our new pregnant members on a monthly basis, encouraging them to sign up to the Plan and to share health messages with them, to improve their lifestyle and that of their baby. This year we have sent over 320,000 emails (an average of nearly 27,000 per month) with a good average open rate of 37% and a healthy average click through rate of 28%.
Tommy's continue to use the Bounty Health Network to spread their health in pregnancy messages and promote the resources available to parents, to over 9,000 healthcare professionals every three months.
Bounty continues to include mentions of the Plan in our You and Your Pregnancy Guide. Bounty distributes 2.6 million of our three guides each year, UK wide.
The Tommy's Pregnancy Line branded wallet sized card continues to be included in Bounty Pregnancy Information Folders (which go to 910,000 pregnant women every year, UK wide and are given out at the early antenatal appointments by midwives). Following the helpline being extended to cover the ten days after the baby's birth - from September a new card was also handed to new mums at the same time as the free Bounty pack (which are given to over 2,000 new parents every day in maternity wards across the UK).
Bounty's free pregnancy app which is endorsed by Tommy's, which includes content from the Plan and provides mums-to-be with personalised support throughout pregnancy. To date the app has been downloaded by more than 172,000 expectant mums.
Bounty hosted both the nomination and voting process of the Tommy's Awards with Bounty 2014 for the second year running. As well as giving over 27,000 real mums a say on their favourite baby-friendly companies, this gave us a unique opportunity to further highlight the Plan online, by email and at the awards ceremony in March 2014.
Bounty and Tommy's continue to work successfully in partnership, together we strive to ensure that more mums-to-be have happy, healthy pregnancies.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
The Five Point Pregnancy Plan is UK wide, so every local community benefits from improved health for pregnant women and their babies.
The revised Chief Medicial Officers (CMO) guidelines provide physical activity recommendations for four distinct age groups. From the following list, please indicate the age groups you have focused on in disseminating the guidelines (if unknown, please explain why):
Early years (under 5s), Children & young people (5-18), Adults (19-64), Older adults (65+)
Pregnant women (adults).
Please estimate the number of people reached through your activities on this pledge and explain how you arrived at this estimate:
41,500 unique visitors to www.bounty.com/tommysplan.
320,000 emails sent to pregnancy women about the Five Point Pregnancy Plan.
9,000 healthcare professionals seen every three months.
910,000 packs given to pregnant women sharing the Tommy's helpline number.
92,000 app downloads which includes the Five Point Pregnancy Plan health advice.
From these figures, we estimate that well over a million pregnant women have received information on the Five Point Pregnancy Plan - which includes a section on exercise.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
In November 2013, we undertook research through Bounty's 39,000 strong 'Word of Mum' research panel. A total of 2,088 interviews were carried out, amongst women in the early stages of pregnancy through to mums with a youngest child aged five years).
The research showed that over the course of the past year, awareness of the importance of physical activity was relatively unchanged. However awareness of the risks of putting on weight during pregnancy increased by 7% and over the two years since the launch of the plan, the amount of women taking a dietary supplement during pregnancy has increased by 14%.
